The Future of Flash and PDF?

OK, so the updated MM acquisition FAQ is making the rounds.

"Our long-term plan is to develop a 'universal client' by combining PDF, Flash and HTML in a single, integrated runtime."

I'm a little confused. I already have a 'universal client', one that is capable of combining PDF, Flash and HTML, along with streaming video, audio, scripting languages and XML. I use it every day. I'm using it right now. It's called a "browser."

I'm curious to see how this story develops...

Exactly my thoughts... Just that PDF files don't display well in my browser so I download them first.

This might seem like a good idea, but one concern that I have is the huge difference in filesize for the two downloads. Approximate filesize of the latest Adobe Reader: 27 MB. Approximate filesize of the latest Flash Player: 1 MB. Hasn't the small download size of the Flash Player been a big part of the success in getting it on so many computers? So when you combine the Flash Player and the Adobe Reader, are we talking about a 28 MB download? Heck, the Reader updates are larger than the Flash Player itself.

gosh I wish PDF would just go away.. it's the most cumbersome thing to use, the 'reader' is huge and slow to load, I'm tired of 4mb+ PDFs that only contain a couple of tiny images (yes, the person who created the PDF could have done a better job, but the software doesn't tell them that they're screwing up), and on and on.. and yet Adobe now wants to tack the Flash Player onto the PDF Reader? Blech!

So would the PDF Reader + Flash Player take 7 seconds to load (that's how long it takes to load a PDF on my system)?

I don't think this has anything to do with the plugins, I think they are talking about 'Apollo'
